The Ralph Lauren empire began in 1967 with the launch of the instantly fashionable Polo line of neckties. Lauren broadened his reputation for classic, American style by designing movie costumes for The Great Gatsby, starring Robert Redford, that were influenced by American icons Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Inspired by his wife Ricky, Lauren launched Lauren by Ralph Lauren in 1971. This label is now part of the Jones Apparel group. Sold in fine department stores.
