Johnston and Murphy was started in 1850 by William Dudley, a shoe maker from England who moved to Newark, New Jersey to craft premium quality footwear. James Johnston and William H. Murphy joined the company in the 1880s and when William Dudley died in 1882, the name changed Johnston and Murphy and has since gained worldwide recognition for their quality footwear.
